Lantern Cross Cottage Details

Lantern Cross is located by the A3124 Winkleigh-Great Torrington road, about three quarters of a mile North of the village of Beaford with its pub and petrol station.  The gated driveway and parking area has space for four cars, with further gates leading to the enclosed garden of almost two acres. Now fully double glazed, the house was comprehensively renovated and re-modelled in 2010.  With two front entrances, the ground floor has a large main lounge with Smart TV and windows both to front and back, a large central dining room with exposed beams,  dining table to seat 8, wood-burning stove and mini hi-fi system and a cosy "snug" with two two seater settees, Smart TV and connected audio system and a second wood-burning stove. There is a table football table and a range of books and games. The large kitchen has a washing machine, tumble drier, dishwasher, large fridge-freezer, microwave, toaster, food processor, coffee mill and cafetieres, comprehensive range of cooking utensils and plenty of storage. The 110cm Rangemaster double electric oven cooker has four gas hobs, a griddle plate, plate warmer and grill. There are views over the garden and patio, with constant interest from the bird feeders close to the garden window.  There are two WCs downstairs, and two back doors, one opening directly onto the lower patio and the other via a convenient glazed enclosed lean-to with dry storage for boots, play equipment and dog bowls.

There are two staircases, one towards either end of the house.  The West staircase leads to the main bedroom with exposed beams, double bed and bedside cabinets, large wardrobe and chest of drawers, wall-mounted TV, wash basin, electric towel rail and windows to front and garden, the main bathroom with WC and shower over the bath, a small separate shower room and the second bedroom with twin beds, large wardrobe and chest of drawers, bedside cabinets and windows to front and side.  There is an interconnecting passage from this bedroom to the East half of the first floor.  Main access to this part of the house is via the staircase in the East Hall, which leads to the second bathroom with WC, shower over the bath and electric towel rail, and to two further bedrooms, each with windows to front and garden, large wardrobe and chest of drawers and bedside cabinets.  One of these bedrooms has a zip-link divan that can be set up either as a super king-size double or twin beds.  It also has a TV and connecting door to the interconnecting passage.  The fourth bedroom has full-size twin beds.  We can provide a travel cot and high chair.

The house has oil-fired central and water heating, supplemented by solar panels for hot water.  Oil, electricity and an initial quantity of logs are included in the rental.  Outside, there are upper and lower patios, a Weber kettle barbeque, patio table and chairs, and trees to provide shade.  The garden is largely grass with a variety of fruit and ornamental trees providing year-round interest and endless opportunities for self-made entertainment for children and dogs.  The garden is fully enclosed, but with several hundred metres of field hedges we recommend that owners keep an eye on their dogs because we cannot guarantee that an inquisitive dog will not find some way through a hedge, although none of our tenants has ever reported a problem with this.  Please note also that this is a garden in the middle of farmland - as such, wildlife (including rabbits, pheasants, partridges, squirrels and occasional deer)  provides plenty of interest but can also result in holes and uneven areas in the ground.

We have SuperFast fixed wireless broadband, offering speeds of up to 40 MB/s, included in the rental.  As the cottage has very thick walls, we have WiFi access points at both ends of the house, giving reasonably comprehensive coverage although with some weaker spots.  Mobile phone coverage varies dependent on network provider, but Vodafone is pretty reliable. 

We welcome up to three well-behaved dogs (and may be prepared to accept more by specific advance arrangement), on condition that tenants do not allow their dogs upstairs or onto the furniture downstairs, and clean up comprehensively after their dogs.

The house is available to let by parties of up to 8 people including infants.
